This project in Old Town Alexandria was completed while I worked at Cunningham + Quill Architects. The client was struggling to get approvals from the Historic Review Board, so we produced a design for a building whose massing and facades were broken up to look like different buildings constructed over time, as you would see in many a historic town of the mid-Atlantic. By creating courtyards around which the apartments were arrayed, it provided each unit at least two sun exposures with views and/or access to the green space, and created more of a community feel than one would typically experience in a block long low-rise apartment building.
