The Clayborne Apartment building is located in the historic district of Alexandria Virginia. To get it approved, we broke it up with different facades, so that it appears to be built up over time. Courtyards were employed to maximize sun exposures and to break up the different facades. At the north end, we included retail spaces to blend into the commercial character of that side street while at the southern end, we designed the facade to look like a row of townhouses.
The center of the facade was designed to read as the 'original' Colonial mansion that was eventually incorporated into an urban street by various Victorian and early 20th century buildings.

Mather Building Apartment Conversion - Washington, DC
This project was a conversion of an historic office building to an apartment/studio building in downtown Washington, DC. We restored the original terra cotta facade and laid out the apartments for artists. The new entrance lobby and canopy depart from the Neo-Gothic details of the original design by drawing from Mies van der Rohe's modern library across the street. This project received a DCAIA award of recognition.

Central Apartments - Silver Spring, MD
This project was done pro bono as a member of my local Citizen's Advisory Board in Silver Spring, Maryland. The original proposal was out of scale and character with the adjacent residential neighborhood. After a lot of opposition and delays, I worked with the developer and neighbors to break down the building's massing into distinct elevations adjacent to the residential neighborhood while adding more density at other parts of the building.
